Aussies Steve Elkington (left) and Jason Day (right) proved inspirational at Whistling Straits
The lasting impression of an otherwise beautiful
course will be the nonsensical design elements that
cost Johnson a chance to win. With the 2015 PGA
Championship and 2020 Ryder Cup scheduled to
be played at Whistling Straits, it will be interesting
to see what changes, if any, occur. Whistling Straits
and its Billionaire owner, Herbert Kohler, bring a
new definition as to what money can create and
how sport is driven by it.
But the events leading up to the end of this
season’s Major were full of so many crashes
and rallies by so many different parties, this
championship could have fallen into a number
of player’s hands, including an Aussie.
Steve Elkington was back in the hunt for
another PGA Championship title to add to
his 1995 win at Riviera Country Club, and the
47-year-old turned back the clock with a stellar
performance at Whistling Straits, although his
putter on the final day proved costly for the
Inverell native.
After a brilliant performance that lifted the
1995 PGA champ within reach of becoming
the second oldest major winner in history, Elk’s
putter let him down in the clutch. He missed a
short birdie try on 15, a close eagle opportunity
on 16 and got a cruel bounce on 17. Yet the worst
damage came with a three-putt on the 18th that
cost him a spot in the 2011 Masters Tournament.
2008, he won the Abu Dhabi Championship
before finishing birdie-birdie-eagle to lie one
shot behind Tiger Woods in Dubai.
First-timers have won six of the last seven
Major championships. In 2010 we have seen
Kaymer win the PGA Championship, the US
Open went to Graeme McDowell from Northern
Ireland, while The Open Championship to South
Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen. In 2009 it was no
different, with South Korea’s YE Yang winning
the PGA Championship, the US Open going to
Lucas Glover and fellow American Stewart Cink
winning The Open Championship.;
