Star-studded line-ups coming to Australia
THIS year’s Summer of Golf is setting
up to be one of the most exciting in
recent times, with a bevy of world-class
players set to compete in our top events.
November’s Australian Masters will
kick off the summer in style, with Tiger
Woods returning to defend his 2009
title. He will be joined by fellow TOUR
players Sergio Garcia (Spain), Camilo
Villegas (Colombia) and Australia’s
Geoff Ogilvy.
After the overwhelming success of
last year’s event, JBWere has returned
as the tournament’s major partner
along with the Channel Nine network
and Fox Sports who will broadcast the
event from The Victoria Golf Club 11
– 14 November.
The following month, Australian star
Adam Scott will return to defend his
Australian Open title at The Lakes in
Sydney from December 2-5. He will be
joined by the likes of Greg Norman,
Geoff Ogilvy and American John
Daly. For the second successive year the
tournament will form the penultimate
leg on OneAsia and offer a purse of
US$1.3 million.
Scott will be looking to extend his
recently-rediscovered form following
his triumph in the Valero Texas Open,
his seventh victory on the PGA Tour. He
will also attempt to claim back-to-back
Australian Opens, claiming last year’s
event by five shots over compatriot
Stuart Appleby after a tense final round
at the NSW Golf Club.
Two-time major champion John
Daly will also be making the trek
Down Under, as he has recently
announced an agreement to play
both The Australian Open and The
Australian PGA at the Hyatt Regency
Coolum (Dec 9-12).
“I love going to Australia,” said Daly,
“I love the fans and Coolum is a great
place to go and work on your game.
It’s real quiet.”
Other players scheduled to play
include a wealth of talent from
OneAsia which this year boasts 11
events, offering a total of over US$12
million in prize money.
Minister for Tourism Jodi McKay
recently said tens of thousands of
spectators were expected to attend the
2010 Australian Open.
“More than 30,000 visitors came for
the Australian Open Golf last year,
including significant numbers from
overseas and interstate. Global golf
stars like Greg Norman, defending
champion Adam Scott and 2006 US
Open Champion Geoff Ogilvy will
guarantee another great crowd in 2010.”
The Australian Open was first played
in 1904 and has been won by the biggest
names in the game. South African
Gary Player has lifted the Stonehaven
Cup a record seven times while Jack
Nicklaus from the United States has
been victorious on six occasions.;
