Sewer saviour
IT’S no secret that long-term water
security is a major bugbear for many
courses – especially those in regional
areas.
But for one regional Victorian course
— Curlewis Golf Club in Geelong – a
little “outside of the box” thinking is
set to pay dividends for years to come.
The golf club has launched a project
to extract sewage from a nearby main
and then treat it at a purpose-built,
on-site plant to produce high-quality
recycled water to irrigate the course.
In doing so, Curlewis will become
the first regional golf course – and only
the second in Victoria – to implement
an innovative sewer mining technology,
and break free from the necessity to
use precious drinking water.
The project — which will benefit
from a $250,000 contribution from
Barwon Water — will save up to 70
million litres of drinking water a year,
and will not only benefit the club, but
also the wider community.
“Not only will this project provide
water security for the golf course,
it will save valuable drinking water
and increase recycled water use,” said
Barwon Water Chairman Roger Lowrey
“We congratulate Curlewis Golf
Club on its vision and drive toward a
sustainable future.” he said.
Mr Lowrey said sewer mining
was consistent with Barwon Water’s
strategic goal to provide sustainable
water and sewerage management.

While the thought of using treated
sewer water may raise some eyebrows
for the uninitiated, the fact is that the
water is completely safe and odour-free.
“That was one of the conditions of
the project,” adds Loughnane. “We
wanted to be certain that there would
be no smell, noise or other adverse
effects for the neighbours and the
walkers on the nearby trail.”
The project has been positively
received by members, with 98 per
cent voting to accept and endorse
the proposal put to them by the club’s
committee of management.
