Cape Town has plenty of quality member courses while the Garden Route is littered with world-class, resort-style parkland and links courses.

In Cape Town, top-notch Mowbray and Rondebosch are close to the city centre while Atlantic Beach is further away but has splendid views of Table Mountain.

At Mossel Bay, just over four hours’ drive from Cape Town, I discovered one of the world’s top- 10 new courses, Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort.

Point is a spectacular layout with some fairways and greens close to the cliff ’s edge.

In fact, many American visitors call it Pebble Beach on steroids.

It’s a visual treat, but it can be a monster when the wind gets up.

Oubaai Golf Resort at George is the first Ernie Els signature course in South Africa and a magnificent addition to his design portfolio.

It’s on the edge of the Indian Ocean, perched atop a plateau that spills down from rugged cliffs.

The course is a fascinating mix of parkland and linksland and plays hard and fast.

Little wonder Els, who lives at nearby
Herolds Bay, reckons it’s the “nearest
thing to heaven”.

Like Pinnacle Point, it has a number of spectacular holes on the cliffs overlooking the ocean.

Other must-play courses include:
• The resort-style De Zalze Country
Club situated in the winelands at
Stellenbosch;

• The Jack-Nicklaus-designed Pearl Valley Golf Club is situated among orchards and vineyards on the outskirts of the wineland town of Franschhoek;

• The highly-rated Arabella Golf Club at Hermanus.

• Fancourt, a premier golf resort with three highly-rated courses on offer, including the Gary Player-designed The Links and the Outenique and Montagu courses;

• Mossel Bay Golf Club, home to British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen. The links-style course is famed for having a view of the Indian Ocean from every tee; and • The Gary Player-designed Goose Valley golf course at Plettenberg Bay.

I found all the facilities and the condition of all the golf courses to be first-class and easily on par with some of the best courses in the world.

So that’s it in a nutshell, a South African golf and safari experience that’s fit for royalty – and without the din of the vuvuzela.;
