Play NZ’s best courses
DavidNewbery
IF you want to reserve your tee time at some of New
Zealand’s best golf courses you’ll have to hurry.
Playing Around New Zealand is offering
Australian golfers the chance to join fully-escorted
tours to either the North Island, the South Island
or both.
The next 10-day tour to the North Island tees off
on November 17 while the nine-day South Island
tour gets underway on November 26.
But don’t worry – if you miss out on the
November tours you can go next year with the
North Island tour starting on January 19 and the
South Island tour starting on January 28.
Playing Around New Zealand CEO Will Owen
said the two itineraries were designed to overlap
to allow keen golf tourists the chance to partake
in both tours.
“So, we do 10 days in the North Island and a
lot of our overseas visitors from the US, Europe
and Australia want to stay longer so we start the
South Island Tour the day the North Island tour
finishes,” he said.
“It allows people to do 18 days if they want.”
Owen said the North Island tour included six
games of golf and takes in the highly-rated Kauri
Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers.
Golfers will also get to experience Titirangi,
Gulf Harbour, Wairakei International and Kinloch
golf courses.
The South Island tour takes you from
Christchurch to Queenstown with games at
Pegasus, Clearwater, Terrace Downs, Millbrook
Tom Doak designed Cape Kidnappers
and the high-acclaimed Jacks Point.
“All our experience tells us the golf courses are
the best in Christchurch and Queenstown and
we get the best of New Zealand’s scenery by
going through the middle via Mount Cook
and Lake Tekapo,” Owen said.
Owen said the maximum number of tourist
on any of the tours is 24.
“We don’t want people to feel they are being
neglected by being in too large a group,” he
said.
“We want people to enjoy a four-star price
with a five-star service, which is what we are
offering with a tour escort.
“The accommodation is at four-star hotels
and resorts and includes breakfasts. Each
property has been carefully selected for its
style, service and location.
“We have a welcome dinner at somewhere
like the French Café – one of Auckland’s
leading restaurants, down here in Christchurch
we do Annie’s Wine Bar and Restaurant and
in Queenstown we do the Botswana Butchery.
“We start and finish the tour at the best restaurants
and that meal is included in the price.”
The cost of the North Island tour is $NZ3975
(around $3200 Australian) per person twin share
while the South Island tour is $NZ2650 ($A2100).
The 18-day tour of the North and South islands
is $NZ6795 (around $A5410). Single supplement
and non-golfer rates are available.
Owen said the tours attract both couples and
singles with varying handicaps.
There are daily competitions and prizes for nearest
the pins, long drives and the overall winners also
receive prizes.
“The most important thing about our tour is they
are fun,” Owen said.
“We also welcome non-golfing partners and supply
a sightseeing and activity program during the tours.”
