Castle Hill claim Masters Pennant
US Tour’s Price putting back
THE team from the Castle Hill Golf Club claimed
the 2010 Golf NSW Master Pennant crown with a
nail-biting 4-3 victory over Oatlands in the final
played at the Carnarvon course.
The crucial match turned out to be the battle
of the No. 7’s, with Castle Hill’s Tony Pagliaro
defeating Brian Watt on the 19th hole, with Castle
Hill CEO Stuart Fraser recounting it took a couple
of extra-ordinary shots to decide the result.
“Tony’s was the pivotal match,” Fraser said. “He
was four down after six, holed a putt from off the
fringe of the green to square the match on the
18th, then he did the same on the 19th to win.”
Team members from L to R Trevor Amery, Wayne Meadth, Gerry Power, Rob Hayes (manager),
Tony Pagliaro, Russell Lambert, Rob Pedersen, John Dakin, Len Marcuccio, David Andrews, Lindsay
Verdon (absent)
Pagliaro’s win was vital to the Castle Hill cause,
especially after their top two players in Gerry
Power and Lyndsay Verdon had gone down to
Robert Payne and Wayne Carpenter in their
respective matches.
Other members of the victorious Castle Hill
team included David Andrews, John Dakin, Russ
Lambert and Wayne Meadth.
For Castle Hill, who cruised into the final with
a 6-1 victory over Cumberland after beating
Monash and Waratah in the earlier rounds, it
was their third Masters Pennant triumph, with
their last win coming in 2005. ;
US PGA Tour campaigner Aron Price will again
lend his support to junior golf in helping to stage a
tournament at his old home course of Kareela during
the Christmas school holidays.
Price, who despite limited opportunity on the US
Tour in 2010 is pushing strongly for a place in the
top 125 and therefore full exempt status in 2011, will
conduct the Aron Price Junior Open at the Kareela
Golf club, which is located in Sydney’s south, on
December 16.
The inaugural Aron Price Junior Open took place
last year with Price making the trip home to the
Sutherland Shire from his base near Jacksonville in
Florida to give a pre-event clinic and to take a hands-on approach to the running of the event.
Price was also able to get his tour sponsor Titleist
on board, with product distributed as prizes and
participation gifts at last year’s tournament.
US Tour commitments allowing, Price is expected
to again be on hand at this year’s event. He was
138th on the moneylist with earnings in excess of
US$500,000 following the Turning Stone Resort
Championship in early August.

JNJG invades the South Coast
Looking for rugby league’s best
Kareela welcomes new man
SOUTH Coast boy Shaun O’Toole has taken the
reins as the new club professional, replacing long-time former pro Aaron Davidson.
O’Toole, who has pledged to assist and drive
Kareela’s junior development and junior recruitment,
is said to be excited about the challenge ahead. He
comes with a solid coaching background, having most
recently worked at the Port Kembla and Shellharbour
courses.
FOOTBALLERS both young and old will take to the
golf course in September to contest the 2010 Rugby
League Players Golf Championship.
To be played at the Beverly Park Golf Club on
September 23, the day will see current NRL players
and former greats of the game lock horns as they fight
for the title of rugby league’s best golfer.
Former Manly legend Cliff Lyons won the 2009
staging of the event, with Western Suburbs and
North Sydney ‘hard-man’ Noel Kelly successful in
2008. Both men are expected to be in the field for
the 2010 championship.
The event donates proceeds to the Men of League
Foundation, an organisation which supports former
players, coaches, administrators, referees, officials
and their families who have fallen on hard times.
The Men of League helps with medical operations,
rehabilitation equipment, nursing home equipment,
grants, counselling and social contact through visits,
cards and telephone calls.;
OVER 300 juniors descended on the NSW South
Coast towns of Bateman’s Bay and Mollymook
during the most recent school holidays to contest
the Subaru State Age Championships.
Conducted by Jack Newton Junior Golf, the
age championships saw boys and girls from 12
years of age to 18 compete at the Mollymook and
Catalina Country Club courses, with winners
crowned in both scratch and handicap categories.
In the Open boys event it was Ryan Smith
from the Concord Golf Club who outlasted his
competition, his two-over par total for the 72-
hole event leaving him one shot clear of Wyong’s
Alex Pitty, with Blake Byrne, the leader entering
the final round, finishing in third place.
The Open girl’s championship saw a one-two
finish for the Australian Golf Club, with Carly
Beck scoring an impressive six stroke win over
club mate Chantal Hodson. The 17-year-old Beck
set up her win with a sizzling 5-under par 67 in
the third round.
