Clayton and Ogilvy
team up
GEOFF Ogilvy is set to make his foray
into golf course design.
It’s believed the former US Open
champion will join forces with Mike
Clayton — who has operated his
own golf course design business for
several years.
Ogilvy has an incredible passion
for golf course design and has spoken
often about his admiration for Alistair
McKenzie, arguably history’s best
course designer.
Clayton has been one of the busiest
local designers in recent years having
worked on courses around the country.
His work on the North and South
course at Peninsula is arguably one of
the best redesign projects undertaken
in Australia, while his collaboration
with Tom Doak on Barnbougle Dunes
and St Andrews Beach has also elevated
his stature.;
The tournament has for years
provided a platform for many young
players leaping onto the world stage.
This year’s tournament includes a
two-hour television package through the
Ten Network’s high definition station.;
Steel Wheeler breaks
through
JOHN Wheeler broke through for his
first Doug Bachli Trophy victory as he
returned a fine one-over-par 72 to win
the 2010 Kingston Heath Senior Amateur
by a single stroke from Kingston Heath
pennant player Gordon Claney. The
handicap trophy went to Pat Giles from
Goonawarra with a nett score of 70, while
Woodlands golfer Andrew Allsep beat
Dave Berg on a countback for the runner-up nett prize with a score of 71 nett.;

Amateur
Marchesani heads to US
JAMES Marchesani is taking the
next step in his career.
The talented Rosebud amateur
recently secured a place at Oklahoma
University where he will undertake a
three-year course in business while
furthering his golf.
Marchesani jetted out last month
off a plus-two handicap. His younger
brother James, 17, is also heading in
the same direction having recently
won the Rosebud Junior Open.
Vic Open seeks sponsors
THE VGA is confident the success of the
Victorian Open will continue this year.
Naming rights sponsor Subaru
has confirmed again. But like all
tournaments, additional supporters are
needed to ensure a prize purse of around
$120,000 can be achieved.
Last year’s winner Jason Norris is
confirmed to defend the title he won
last year after making a stunning return
to form following a bike accident that
almost ended his career.
DESPITE a strong battle on the back-9,
Victorian Keiran Pratt lost his semifinal
match against American Gregor Main
in extra time after an exciting round at
the Western Amateur in the US. Trailing
Main for most of the match, Pratt battled
back with a birdie on the 13th, an eagle
2 on the 15th and birdie on the 18th to
force extra holes. Main proved too strong
in the playoff, however, rallying to win on
the 19th hole, and thus advancing to the
final. Pratt has returned to Melbourne to
prepare for the Australian Interstate Series
this month.;
YARRA Yarra’s Michael Jackson has
taken out the ‘Ray Barned’ Yarra
Yarra Senior Amateur for the second
successive year, firing a steady 74 to
secure a three shot lead over Alan
Bullas, Andrew Janiak, and Guy Krall.
In the handicap section, Churchill
Park’s Andrew Janiak recorded a nett
71 to win in a countback from Yarra
Yarra’s Edward Mitchell.
The ‘Ray Barned’ Yarra Yarra Senior
Amateur honours long-time golfing
servant Ray Barned. Ray was a VGA
member of the VGA Council for eleven
years, and a delegate to the AGU
Council. His credentials for the YYGC
are second to none, with 47 years of
membership, Club captain 1991-1993,
eight years on the clubs committee,
club champion in 1982, and a fifteen
year pennant player.;
